20 Years of Zapatista Autonomy

Why did peasant farmers, who named themselves after the revolutionary general Emiliano Zapata "Zapatista" begin their rebellion on the 1.1.1941 in South Mexican Chiapas? How did they manage to build autonomous parallel structures in the face of a repressive Mexican state? What does daily life look like in the Zapatista communities? How do they autonomous coffee cooperatives function after years of slave like working structures for proprietors? What doe the struggles of women within and outside the movement look like? Which initiatives did the Zapatistas start to spread their rebellion under the banner of "everything for everyone"? Why do they have such support in Mexico and globally? The insurgence of 1994 had an influence on the European and German left. We will highlight the history of the Zapatista movement and the effects on and inspiration it provided to the undogamatic left worldwide. Speakers: Activists from Ya-Basta-platform

Warum begannen am 1. Januar 1994 zehntausende indigene Kleinbäuer_innen, die sich nach dem Revolutionsgeneral Emiliano Zapata ’Zapatistas’ nennen, im südmexikanischen Chiapas ihre Rebellion? Wie schafften sie es, autonome Parallelstrukturen zum mexikanischen Staat aufzubauen? Wie ist der Alltag in den rebellischen Gemeinden? Wie funktionieren die autonomen (Kaffee-)Kooperativen, in denen sich Menschen organisieren, die bis vor wenigen Jahren noch in sklaverei-ähnlichen Strukturen für Großgrundbesitzer schuften mussten? Wie steht es um die Kämpfe der Frauen inner- und außerhalb der Bewegung? Welche Initiativen haben die Zapatistas gestartet, um ihre Rebellion unter dem Motto ’Alles für Alle!’ auszuweiten?
